The Healthy Love Box Kick-off!

April 24, 2014

Today was the big day!  Mary Brown, member of the CEP 4-H Advisory Committee, kicked off her "Healthy Love Box" program at the Winn Elementary PTA meeting with the support of school staff.  The "Healthy Love Box" program seeks to help eliminate childhood hunger in low-resource communities by providing a "Healthy Love Box" filled with healthy, non-perishable food items for a family that faces food insecurity.  The program then asks the family to "pay it forward" by providing a healthy item in turn for the next family to receive the healthy love box.  The "Healthy Love Box" program was well received at Winn Elementary and will soon expand to other area schools.

Travis County 4-H CEP staff assisted the program by providing nutritional information for the family receiving the box and also to Ms. Brown to assist in selecting healthy choices for the Healthy Love Box.

Happy Mom's Day!

Happy Mother's Day everyone!  I am proud to share this photo from CEP 4-H Advisory Committee Member Mary Brown's event providing healthy bread for food insecure moms on Mother's Day at Mason Manor Apartments.  Keep up the great work, Mary!

Healthy Love Box for Hungry Children

April 10, 2014

The second CEP 4-H Advisory Meeting for Travis County in 2014 was held on this day.  These meetings are held to help plan upcoming CEP 4-H Programming in the County taking into account the interests of community members who are invested in our programs.

Present were three members of Bethany Christian Church DOC 4-H and Mary Brown.  Ms. Brown came to the meeting to discuss her new program, the "Healthy Love Box" which aims to help needy families in central Texas by providing healthy, non-perishable food items in a "love box" which is given to a select family at target schools.  "Healthy Love Box" will target schools in areas with a high risk of food insecurity.  It is important to remember that even in a state like Texas where the economy is fairly healthy, that many children are going to school hungry and this can lead to problems with discipline and concentration in the classroom.  This wonderful program will help to address this issue.  I have lent support to the program by providing educational materials about nutrition to be included in the love boxes and also offering advice as to good healthy food options to be used in the boxes.  The first "Healthy Love Box" will be given to a family at Winn Elementary at the PTA meeting to be held on April 24th.  I will be in attendance representing the CEP program at this event.  Ms. Brown has done an excellent job on the presentation of the "Healthy Love Box" and I think these pictures will show that:
